In JoSAA, you don't just pick colleges — you rank them. The order of your preference list directly decides where you land. Here's what most students get wrong.
Wrong Sequence
Result: Got stuck at NIT Jaipur ECE because it was listed first.
Correct Sequence
Result: IIT Roorkee CSE was allotted because higher-priority choices were listed first.
JoSAA allots you the first preference in your list where your rank qualifies.
Once allotted, all lower preferences are permanently ignored.

JoSAA Basics You Must Know
Understanding these terms can save you from costly mistakes.
Freeze
You're happy with your seat. Selecting "Freeze" means you accept the currently allotted seat and do NOT want to be considered for any other preference. Your admission is confirmed, and you're done with counselling.
Float
Keep your seat, but try for better. You retain your current allotment as a safety net, but you'll be considered for any higher preference in the next round. If upgraded, your old seat is released.
Slide
Keep the college, try a better branch. You're happy with the institute but want a different (higher-preference) branch within the same college. If a better branch opens, you slide into it.
Withdraw / Exit
Leave the process entirely. If you don't want the allotted seat and don't want to continue, you can exit. Your seat is released for others. Warning: this is irreversible.
Quick Filling Rules
List your most preferred choice at position 1, even if it's a long shot
You can fill up to unlimited preferences — more is always better
Locking choices happens after each round; changes are limited after allotment
Always have safe choices at the bottom of your list as backup
Accepting a seat doesn't lock you in if you choose Float or Slide
Report to college after final round to confirm your admission
